Heavenly Sweetness presents GUTS‘s new album “HIP HOP AFTER ALL”, available on September 8th, 2014
Without hip-hop, Guts wouldn’t be half the producer he is today. Hip-hop as inspiration, a gateway to so many different musical styles, the trigger for a continually expanding musical bulimia, the springboard from which he dived into a bottomless musical well.
Hip-hop – which has been Guts’ true love for the last 25 years, despite its taking futile, gangsta and materialistic paths.
Hip-hop – which in quarter of a century has driven him to spend whole nights with samplers, drum machines, expanders and vinyl, tapping on pads, adjusting the drums and honing his samples.
Hip-hop – which is often done remotely nowadays by sending digital files back and forth. Guts has opted to make it shine like when it was all brand new, decided after three entirely instrumental albums to re-establish contact with rappers, vocalists, jazz players and soul men by packing up his productions and heading across the Atlantic to record them in their home surroundings in New York and California.
Backed up on production by the inexhaustible DJ Fab (Hip Hop Resistance) and supported from Paris by his label Heavenly Sweetness (“A French label spreading colourful music for the soul”), Guts explores a host of styles, flows and atmospheres to build up a mosaic of 16 tracks, each nestling inside the other to form a single concept: Hip Hop After All.

1st Single: Open Wide feat. Lorine Chia
Originally from Cameroon, but has lived in Cleveland since she was six. A bewitching voice that’s as comfortable chilling on a soul track as skipping to a reggae bass.
QUELLE CHRIS & DENMARK VESSEY
Precision mechanics with a falsely chaotic sound, two interlocking cogs in action: a duo assembled on the production lines of Motor City.
Donwill and Von Pea, a two-person team linking Cincinnati to Brooklyn with the lyrical freshness of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and company. Every beat has the hallmark of 90s’ hip-hop.
In rap women are usually just a foil to knock off some r’n’b choruses, but not Rah Digga. Dirty Harriet, a member of the Flipmode Squad, claimed her place among the alpha males Busta Rhymes and Rampage with her ferocious flow.
Only another untamed feline could share a track with RahDigga without having to fear being eaten alive – and that’s Akua. This rapper hones her lines and tears up the beat with rhymes like claws and a snarling flow.
Trumpet, vocals, songwriting, soul, jazz, rap or funk: the guy from Houston who moved to New York is a master of styles and disciplines, a one-man musical Swiss army knife.
One-third of the mythical Brand Nubian crew. True school 90s classic hip-hop. His style’s is rounded and amiable, but is anyone crazy enough to stroke a grizzly that’s never hibernated?
Back to Brooklyn. With only 20 years on the clock, Dillon’s the youngest MC in these credits. One of the satellite rappers in Joey Bada$$’s orbit, this rookie has taken to boom bap productions like an old hand who grew up to the sound of grainy drums and jazz trumpets.
PATRICE & THE STUDIO SCHOOL VOICES NYC
Half Sierra Leonean, half German, half reggae, half soul, used to playing pared-down acoustic, here Patrice changes tack and faces off against a New York City children’s choir.
After starting out as a genial tinkerer who made a first album swarming with ideas and teeming with influences in his bedroom, Cody the soulman now walks in the footsteps of Marvin Gaye.
Murs can stand for a lot of things: Making the Universe Recognize and Submit, Making Underground Raw Shit, My Ultimate Rare Sit-down. His voice is husky, his style is raw and, as the only Californian rapper in a NYC cast list, Murs is cheating on his favourite producer 9th Wonder just this once.
The Queensbridge producer, at the controls since 1988. A model musician who never had to go against his instincts to earn the plaudits of purists who prefer their rap neat, no ice. Focused at the mike, immaculate in style.
