Sly, Sly Johnson, Sly The Mic Buddah : du Saïan Supa Crew jusqu’à sa carrière solo, la boîte à rythmes humaine a multiplié les identités.
Passé du Hip Hop à la Soul, puis de la Soul au beatmaking ; du flow au chant, puis du chant à la production, Sly Johnson n’a jamais vraiment changé d’univers. Juste a-t-il varié la direction de sa boussole musicale pour naviguer dans le groove.
C’est plongé dans la mécanique à processeurs et circuits imprimés qu’on le trouve aujourd’hui, sous l’alias de TAGi, producteur-beatmaker qui, pour l’occasion, s’est adjoint les services de Steven Beatberg. C’est ensemble, en autarcie artistique avec pour seules présences logiciels, samplers et séquenceurs, qu’ils ont construit leurs morceaux à la lumière de leur écran d’ordinateur, rythmant les journées par des calages de caisses claires ou des triturages de plugs puisés dans leur base de sons.
Si les disques sont souvent le matériau nourricier du son Hip Hop, TAGi et Steven n’ont pourtant pas eu recours au sampling. Leurs enregistrements favoris n’ont pas été une matière à exploiter, mais une esthétique de laquelle s’inspirer pour composer, rechercher atmosphères et mélodies, fouiller ses arrangements. Après trois EP dominés par des instrumentaux, est alors venu pour le duo, le moment de concrétiser un rêve : charpenter un album à plusieurs voix où la production personnalisée pour l’invité guiderait le processus créatif.
Se mettre au service exclusif d’artistes qu’ils affectionnent particulièrement, tous différents mais reliés par une résistance sans concession au vent commercial qui souffle sur le Hip Hop. Pour chacun d’eux, ils ont construit un titre, avec en tête l’idée précise de mettre en lumière celui ou celle qui viendrait vocalement en habiller les mesures.
Rapper Big Pooh, l’ancien membre du groupe Little Brother (avec Phonte & 9th Wonder), la soul contemporaine de Lisa Spada, mais aussi la rappeuse #madeinfrance Pumpkin (digne descendante de MC Solaar, Fabe…), l’extra-terrestre Georgia Anne Muldrow aux multi-facettes, le MC Finale, la nouvelle vague montante de la scène Hip-Hop à Detroit. Tiemoko de Paris, Saga un MC dans la pure tradition du Hip-Hop New-yorkais, la très smooth-jazzy Elodie Rama et Dilouya, le producteur du précédent disque de Sly (The Mic Buddah), sont de ce casting où hommes et femmes se partagent les rôles et où TAGi, dès que le micro se présente à lui, redevient Sly Johnson pour quelques refrains, chœurs ou relecture en solo du sublime “Retrograde” de James Blake.
Guidé par le Hip Hop depuis les 90’s jusqu’à aujourd’hui, léché dans les détails, YOUARESURROUNDED fait trôner des claviers vintage sur des rythmiques granuleuses, injectant une Soul lascive, P-funk, électro futuriste ou mélancolique en touche noires et blanches sur 13 titres qui sont autant d’ambiances et d’émotions à explorer. Avec pour fil d’Ariane, le courant Funk et soulful qui le traverse de bout en bout.

From Hip Hop to Soul, then from Soul to Beatmaking: from flow to singing, then from singing to production, Sly Johnson never really changed universe. He has just changed the direction of his musical compass in order to navigate with more flow.
Today, it’s immersed in the mechanics with processors and printed circuits that we find him, under the alias of TAGi, producer-beatmaker who, for the occasion, has joined the services of Steven Beatberg. It’s together, in artistic autarchy with the only presence of softwares, samplers and sequencers, that they have built their pieces in the light of their computer screens, rhythmizing the days by inserting snares or grindings of plugs taken from their sound database.
If records are, most of the time, Hip Hop’s nourishing materials, TAGi et Steven have however not used any samples. Their favourite recordings were not materials to exploit, but an aesthetic from which to inspire, compose, and search atmospheres and melodies, search his arrangements. After three EP dominated by instrumentals, the duo finally chose to realise their dream: to craft a multi-voice album where customized production for each guest would guide the creative process. To put themselves at the exclusive service of artists they particularly love, all different but connected by an uncompromising resistance to the commercial wind blowing on Hip Hop. For each one of them, they have built a title, keeping in mind the precise idea to put to light he or her that will vocally dress the bars.
Rapper Big Pooh, the former member of the Little Brother group (With Phonte & 9th Wonder), the contemporary soul of Lisa Spada, but also the rapist #madeinfrance Pumpkin (worthy descendant of MC Solaar, Fabe …), multi-faceted Georgia Anne Muldrow, the MC Finale, the new rising wave of artists of the Hip-Hop scene in Detroit. Tiemoko from Paris, Saga an MC who follows the pure tradition of the New York Hip-Hop, the very smooth-jazzy Elodie Rama and Dilouya, the producer of the previous record of Sly (The Mic Buddah), are of this casting where men and women share the roles and where TAGi, as soon as the mic presents itself to him, becomes again Sly Johnson for some refrains, choruses or solo rereading of the sublime “Retrograde” of James Blake.
