Musician and activist Byard Lancaster just passed away of pancreatic cancer.
A spiritual child of John Coltrane whom he frequented and played with a few times, he played sax, flute, piano and sang with an intense spiritual connection. He has released more than 20 albums under his name and played or recorded with Mc Coy Tyner, Sun Ra, Sunny Murray, Bill Dixon, Bill Laswell, Jef Gilson among so many others.
He was my mentor for a few years, welcomed me in his home in Philly and introduced me to the Philly Jazz scene. I had the chance and pleasure to produce a few albums from him and his friends and had some of my most magical recording studio experiences with him.
His motto was ‘From Sex Machine to a Love Supreme’ and I’m sure he is now resting in the Spirit’s Light …
Our label name ‘Heavenly Sweetness’ was taken from one of his composition’s title and we had the pleasure to produce his album ‘Thunderbid Service’ (release through Discograph) and his version of Blue Train on 7”.

Fils spirituel de John Coltrane qu’il fréquentât, il jouait du saxophone, de la flûte, du piano et chantait avec un intense connection spirituelle.
Il a publié plus d’une vingtaine d’albums sous son nom en quarante-cinq ans de carrière et joué ou enregistré avec Mc Coy Tyner, Sun ra, Sunny Murray, Bill Laswell, Jef Gilson, et de très nombreux autres …
Il fut mon mentor pendant quelques années, m’accueillit chez lui à Philadelphie où il me présenta à la scène jazz locale . J’ai eu la chance et la joie de produire quelques albums avec lui et ses amis et ai vécu des moments magiques en studio à Paris ou Philly.
Son slogan était ‘From Sex Machine to A Love Supreme’ et je suis sûr qu’il baigne maintenant dans la Lumière Spirituelle qu’il canalisait si souvent.
Notre label tient son nom d’une de ses compositions et nous avons publié un de ses derniers enregistrements , une version de Blue Train que vous pouvez trouver en 45 tours et sur notre compilation.
